Chapter 14

Chapter Fourteen

“Hey.”

Busy stacking glasses as she unloaded the dishwasher, Liane hadn’t heard Drew come in. She jumped and shot him a filthy look. He offered an apologetic smile.

“Sorry. Didn’t mean to startle you.”

“At least I didn’t break any glasses,” she grumbled, but it was hard to stay grumpy when he was leaning on the bar looking so handsome. She walked out from behind the bar and reached up to hook her arms around his neck, draw him around for a kiss. “So what brings you around here before the bar opens?” She saw him most days, though he was never able to stay overnight. Just over a week since they’d first slept together, they’d had little opportunity since, and Liane was definitely starting to feel like she had an itch that needed scratching.

“Just wanted to let you know I’m not gonna be around for a couple of days. Going on an errand.”

“Oh?” Something about the way he said it set off warning bells in Liane’s mind, and she stopped thinking about her libido for a minute. “Somewhere special?”

“Not exactly sure, to be honest. Over the border somewhere. I’ll get details when I get closer, but I’ve been told to head for Edmonton.”

“On your bike?”

“Nah. Taking Bull’s van.”

It was a smuggling run, Liane instantly realized. Though whether Drew was taking something into Canada or bringing something else back - or possibly even both - she didn’t know. And quite possibly, neither did he.

“You going on your own?”

“No, Kaleb’s coming with.”

They were alone in the bar at that moment, but Liane still barely breathed the words as she leaned in, her lips close to Drew’s ear. “It’s a test.”

“Of course,” he murmured back, nuzzling her neck. “Not the first. Bull’s showed me a hidden compartment under the van’s floor, but it’s not big enough.”

She understood what he meant. Whatever could fit into that compartment wasn’t enough to make this the major route the Brethren used to smuggle whatever it was they were moving. Bull’s van rarely left his garage, besides.

“Okay. Well, I guess I’ll see you when you get back.” Nobody was watching, so she didn’t have to do it, but she still pulled his face down to hers and kissed him, long and slow. “Be careful,” she whispered against his lips.

“Always.” He lifted his head, smiled down at her. “I’ve been practicing with my new pistol.”

“You’re taking it with you?”

“Secret compartment,” he reminded her.

“Fair point.” She felt a little better knowing he’d be armed. And that Kaleb was with him, because she was pretty sure that Bull was actually very fond of Kaleb and wouldn’t knowingly put his nephew in harm’s way. “Well. Have a good trip. Bring me back some maple syrup.”

He laughed, as she’d meant him to. “I’ll text you when I’m on my way back.”

That would be a normal thing to do and shouldn’t arouse any suspicion. She nodded, accepting it, kissed him once more and watched him leave. Calling to her staff that she was just
